Some days just call for steakhouses and martinis, especially if the nights are growing longer and the world is growing darker. Why not celebrate the night?
My new favorite place for a walk back to the ’70s—when the grownups dressed for dinner and drank many martinis—is the sadly underrated Blackstones Steakhouse on East Main Street in Mount Kisco, N.Y. Glide down the steps in the building that once housed the Fish Cellar—and briefly Enzo’s of Arthur Avenue—and appreciate the speakeasy ambiance as you pass the cloakroom. Dark curtains and glowing bottles of booze behind the bar lead you into a more soothing past.
The Brawny Sherpa is here for the beef. Not a meat eater? There are no judgments here. This is one steakhouse that does side dishes well: baked potatoes, mushrooms, spinach, asparagus.
Me? I savor the entire experience: the wine bottles lining glass walls, white-jacketed servers, the mystery of all of these rooms in this place.
