The Brawny Sherpa and I wander aimlessly through Captiva Island, Fla., having ditched our rental car somewhere with the optimistic hope that we’ll remember its color, make and license number when it’s time to retrieve it. This is a day trip for us as we wind down from a family get-together in not-so-far-away Naples. Nothing is on our agenda except good weather and sunscreen.
We wander down side streets with not much on our minds. The universe has bigger plans for our souls this day as we come across the charming Chapel By The Sea and a little historical cemetery populated by early residents and those with a connection to this place.
We explore this peaceful place for a bit and marvel at the old gravestones that have withstood storms and hurricanes. We are glad that the sand here has remained appropriately in place. We appreciate a bit of shade and reflection on a bright, carefree day.
We are not long out of the cemetery when a reminder of the circle of life splatters before us on the street. A bird overhead is having lunch and is a bit of a messy eater.
