Forget bikini ready; right now, I am training to be adventure ready. I am contemplating a hiking vacation in a desert in a very hot place, so I practice by going running in very humid New York.
Where in more youthful years, I would starve myself to fit well—or as well as I could—into the swimsuit of my choice, now I focus on being sufficiently fit for a trip.
Right now, that means running every day. I get bored easily, though, so am already contemplating mixing up my routine by adding a lake swim and a biking component.
I’ve had my share of misadventures—mostly in the form of badly sprained ankles in places like the jungles of Belize and the streets of Paris, so now I take getting adventure ready far more seriously than I have in the past. Even if my take-a-long-walk-in-a-hot-desert plants don’t work out, I’ll be ready for whatever is next.
