The Brawny Sherpa and I were turned on by good friends to a well-kept secret about a fantastic place to stay in Newport, R.I.: Bannister’s Wharf. A handful of rooms are located on the wharf over some shops that are right in front of the docks. Sitting out on the deck and watching the sunlight play with the water, I just want to begin painting pictures of boats on sunny days—and I don’t even paint!
There’s great people-watching and boat-watching to be had here, and the amazing part is that it’s quiet at night despite the crowds. I’m not sure whether it’s the elevation or just good insulation, but our sleep is sound and our days are absolutely marvelous. Be prepared to make new friends: sitting on the deck is a favorite pastime of this place’s very friendly guests, many of whom are returnees.
Book early! With so few rooms available, you’ll need to plan ahead.
