When It Absolutely, Positively Has to Be High-End
I will forever regret missing out on what would have been my first trip to Venice, Italy. A friend and I were alternating hotel qualities: one day slumming it, the next day staying in a nicer place. The day we were supposed to head to Venezia was one where we were going low-end. It was raining, and crappy, and we just weren’t in the mood for another dive given then weather, so instead of ponying up the money and staying in a better place, we turned left and headed toward the lake district, where, at least, it was sunny. And so I skipped Venice and didn’t get there for another 20 years.
I am fortunate that there just aren’t that many options on Key Biscayne, Fla. So I find it easy to rationalize a visit to the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne. Even the entrance is civilized, having spicy Bloody Mary’s poolside even more so, and lunch on the sand at Dune Oceanfront Burger Lounge is as good as I could possibly want it to be.

Sometimes in the Florida Keys, I’m going for a budgeted existence; but the place sure is fun when I’m not.
