A Danbury, Conn. Getaway with Something for Everyone
First introduced to Hotel Zero Degrees in Danbury, Conn. courtesy of a wedding, I liked it so much that I returned recently for a stayover. Located just off Interstate 84 in Connecticut, not too far from the border of Westchester county, N.Y., the hotel offers amenities for bashful adventurers and more social ones alike: clean, contemporary rooms—ours with a chaise longue perfect for reading and also for lounging—replete with walk-in showers and plenty of well-placed outlets for charging up all sorts of electronics.
What Works at Hotel Zero Degrees for Bashful Adventurers
Check-in has always been quick and breezy—replete with friendly staff—and the lobby offers seating options that include access to newspapers for more solitary perusal. An outdoor patio also offers plenty of chairs and seating arrangements for those who just want some blessed ‘me’ time to contemplate the skies or just to summon the good forces of the universe. The grounds are surprisingly quiet given the hotel’s proximity to a major interstate.
For Foodies of All Temperaments: Terra Restaurant
Although my earlier visit included some quality time at the well-stocked bar (go for some WhistlePig rye if you are so inclined) courtesy of a wedding after-party, I had not managed to eat at Terra, the onsite restaurant at Hotel Zero Degrees, until my most recent visit.
Choosing an indoor banquette given this past season’s heat and humidity, we are delighted with our selections and with the fact that we run into some friends.
This place is both a great place for travelers but also for locals—the food is that good.
Crispy cauliflower with peanut romesco sauce is cooked perfectly and is flavorful as well. Lobster and roasted corn ravioli contains just the right proportions of each. The Brawny Sherpa enjoyed the fried calamari and a strip steak.
The tiramisu looks beautiful, but in the mind of one of us, would have been enhanced with more rum.
In any event, veg-heads as well as committed carnivores will each find something suitable here. I have also heard good things about Terra’s brunch offerings, but that will have to wait for next time.
As guests of the hotel, we availed ourselves of the free Starbucks coffee but skipped the free breakfast in an effort to compensate for that tiramisu consumption.
All in all, both Terra the restaurant and Hotel Zero Degrees are reasonably priced and provide maximum comfort.
