For me, the only thing more dangerous than having to walk past a book store on my way home from work (personally, I think Kramerbooks and Afterwords Café should still be grateful for my patronage during my D.C. years) is having a coffee bar in my building. In our short stay at Newport’s Bannister’s Wharf guestrooms, the Brawny Sherpa and I manage to make about a half a dozen visits to the Coffee Grinder, which is right downstairs. Plain old “American coffee” here is just as good as the espresso drinks, soy milk is plentiful, and you can get your beverage in a real cup—not paper!

The treats at Newport's Coffee Grinder are alluring, but the quality of the drinks is what turns some of us into repeat customers. Photo credit: M. Ciavardini

Walk past the Black Dog to the end of the wharf to stop in for some good java and to see probably the hardest working barista ever. Oh, and there’s something of a good view.
