Fast Food Around the World and a Pulp Fiction Moment
Why on earth should a visitor in France make time to get a royale with cheese in Paris? My quirky weird travel thing is that I secretly love to indulge in American fast food when I’m in other countries. Have a Burger King or McDonald’s in your destination? I’ll be there. It was a habit I picked up long ago during a stay in Rome when pretty much everything except McDonald’s by the Spanish Steps was closed on a Sunday (and, back then, you could even get wine there!).

I liked fast food in foreign countries long before the film Pulp Fiction made a royale with cheese something of a must-get if you happen to be in Paris.
Why the Need for a McDonald’s Royale?
So, on my most recent trip (with the youthful adventurers), there was no question that of course we would be stopping by McDonald’s Paris for a royale with cheese. They are not so youthful that they have not seen the film Pulp Fiction. The famous scene where John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson discuss the French version of a quarter pounder pretty much stays with all of us.
In a land following the metric system, a quarter pounder with cheese doesn’t exactly make sense. And so each of the youthful adventurers chooses the burger that John Travolta made famous for American audiences: a royale with cheese.
With the youthful adventurers delighting in a Parisian feast involving what is otherwise known as a quarter pounder with cheese, I am at McDonald’s purely for the cappuccino and macarons. Could I score these at my local McDonald’s, I would be there all the time.
Say what you will about fast food, but it is fun to get a little taste of home when you are nowhere near home and to experience somewhat familiar surroundings in a very different place. So I make no excuses about my food choices while traveling. Visiting McDonald’s Paris is fun!

In fact, in France we don’t call it ” royal with cheese” but just “royal cheese” 😉
I’ll have to go back to test that phrase! 🙂
