The Bashful Adventurer reviews the Parker New York Hyatt hotel in midtown Manhattan: What inspires me to book a stay at the Parker New York Hyatt? That it is just steps away from the Russian Tea Room, where I happen to have a brunch date. I will have to find out whether the convenience merits the booking.

As a New Yorker (the state sort, but a city dweller at one time), I tend to book hotel stays in New York City for convenience—typically, their proximity to some activity with which I am involved. That means I am not so concerned with views, amenities, or even minibars. I’m having my fun elsewhere, not settling in for a long winter’s night, a summer sojourn, or anything else. As I age and, increasingly, embrace convenience, I tend not to want to take a roundtrip train trip between my home and Manhattan in a single day. And that means that more hotels in Manhattan are earning my business.

What’s Attractive about a Visit to the Parker New York Hyatt?

What’s important to me about any hotel stay in New York City besides location is speed and ease of check-in, room comfort and cleanliness, quietness, and security. And so it is that we head to the Parker New York Hyatt, well ahead of any 3 p.m. check-in time, hoping for the best.

And the best is what we get. There is no hassle getting into our room a bit early, the queue for check-in is practically nonexistent, and we score keys to room 1528 speedily. An uncrowded elevators whisks us upward. The hush of the hallway bodes well for slumber.

A Stay in Parker New York Hyatt Room 1528

A king size bed and plenty of lighting offer the comfort we seek on this short stay. The plan is just to lounge about for a bit, maybe read a little, between other plans in New York City. I fantasize that I will make use of the desk facing the window in our room, but I have not even brought my computer. The only time I use the desk it to climb upon it awkwardly to pull down the night shade—a touch of inconvenience in an otherwise well-appointed room, about which I have no substantive complaints.

The room is clean, although the bathroom could have used a spring cleaning-level scrub. We sleep well here; no noises of the city, or of other hotel guests, intrude.

Although the lobby bar Knave tempts us, we are too busy on this visit to more than walk through on our way to other activities. We do make time for brunch at Norma’s on a busy Sunday morning. Even though we do not order the much-talked-about $2,000 lobster frittata with caviar, we are pleased with eggs benedict (there are multiple options to choose from!) for me and steak and egg for the Brawny Sherpa.

We do not for a moment contemplate the healthful quinoa breakfast bowl or avocado toast, but vow to return for a Dutch orange souffle pancake and the cornbread & gravy and the mango-papaya brown butter cinnamon crepes and … and ….

There is much to amuse here, both for the palate and for people-watching. Up early on a Sunday morning, we are fortunate to be seated immediately without a reservation; others are encouraged to plan ahead far more than we did.

All in all, our visit to the Parker New York Hyatt exceeds expectations and we would stay here again. Checkout is as speedy as check-in.

  1. depending upon the room I’ve had, it varies. I stay for the convenience ( Central Park) and the orange souffle pancake at Norma”s.
I stayed with my sisters in a suite and it was NOT worth the price whatsoever…really lacking; needs updates. However I have stayed on 3-4 other occasions in a room and while its NOT GREAT it is totally fine.
