Color me crazy, but taking a road trip just to score some good coffee and donuts is not entirely high on my agenda. But I keep hearing good things (indeed, crazy-good things) about Donut Crazy in Westport, Conn. Yet still I wonder, what can be so special about a doughnut?

Asks the more of an everything-bagel-with-scallion-cream-cheese fan if I happen to be indulging in some early morning carbs. But when I discover that Donut Crazy of Westport is not too far from Sherwood Island State Park, the Brawny Sherpa and I decide to make the trek to find out what all the fuss is about.

Located in the former train station at the Westport stop of Metro North, Donut Crazy delights right away.

Prepare to walk in and be entranced both by the charming ambiance but, more importantly, by the most alluring, incredible doughnuts. With flavors like Maple Bacon, S’Mores, and Kookie Monster, we can tell we are in a good place (even though the fact that the parking lot at the train station is pretty full for a Saturday morning already alerts us that Donut Crazy’s customers are pretty committed to the product).

Sidle up to the display case and ponder the selection. On my first visit, I opt for what I rationalize is a healthful choice: an apple pie doughnut (because, fruit!). This particular confection is not just some apple pie filling squeezed between walls of doughnut dough. Oh no. I love Donut Crazy’s own description: “Raised yeast shell with vanilla fondant frosting, topped with walnut brittle pieces, heaping of apple turnover filling, dulce de leche and vanilla drizzle, and finished with a whip rosette.”

I also am able to grab a bite of the Brawny Sherpa’s choice: Hostess. Like the cupcakes of our youth.

Both doughnuts deliver a little burst of bliss. What’s so great about them? Their freshness, that they truly seem to be made with care at this family-owned operation, and their flavor.

We go over the top again on our second visit, where I choose a Strawberry Cheesecake doughnut, and the Brawny Sherpa opts for Moon Pie.

We need to return over and over so we can sample every flavor. I’m still jonesing for a Key Lime pie doughnut, but a Cereal doughnut topped with Fruity Pebbles also might be calling my name.

What Bashful Adventurers Might Like about Donut Crazy

  • Donut Crazy features tables as well as a communal table with couches. Usually not one for talking to strangers, I cannot help but yack with my neighbors about the doughnut flavors they choose and their recommendations. Maybe it’s the sugar high that gets me talking, but casual conversation with people appreciating an indulgence of their own is delightful.
  • Staff are chipper and speedy—just what you need when you need a sugar fix.
  • The coffee is flavorful and as fresh as the doughnuts.
