Solid Lotion, Shampoo, and Conditioner

Save the Environment, Smell Good, and Get Clean at the Same Time!

I discovered the Naples Soap Company on a trip to—you guessed it—Naples, Fla. Good news: they ship! Which is wonderful because I’ve become addicted to its Moisturizer Stick, which comes in flavors like lavender vanilla and pure paradise. It is so much better than tossing a small bottle of lotion into my pursue—no accidents! At this point, I keep one in almost every bag. And, unlike a big bottle of lotion I once stashed in my purse, the TSA folks have never asked me to toss my moisturizer stick.

Also delightful and perfect for traveling (and for the environment) are solid shampoos and conditioners, also in fun flavors. Products for those with sensitive skin are available, too.

Smart Scents

Be Wise—Travel with Solids

For more intense moisturizing, and rather than bringing a bottle of perfume on the road, I cart a little canister of Zum Rub by Indigo Wild. My favorite scent for this product made from shea butter and all sorts of good stuff is frankincense and myrrh, but plenty of other scents can be had, too.

Mom Is Going to Need a Good Travel Bag

Flexible and Washable Work Best for Traveling

Long a lover of Le Sportsac bags, my own has accompanied me to countless destinations. Why? Let’s talk plenty of zippered pockets and an ability to expand as I accumulate all sorts of stuff on the road. These bags are fun and machine washable. What’s not to like?! On those occasions when I need to be a bit more formal while traveling (i.e., for work), I trend toward all things Coach.

Scarves Are Never Wrong

Even if one’s mother already has a colorful pashmina, having a few more can fill out a wardrobe. Pashminas provide pops of color and offer warmth in iffy weather and on those oh-so-chilly plane rides. These large scarves come at various price points, so they are perfect for large or small budgets. Another great choice (machine washable again!) is a shemagh, also known as a keffiyeh.

Colorful and Comfy Travel Shoes

Who doesn’t love a new pair of shoes? I was fortunate to get a pair of Arcopedico Lolita shoes before recent trips to Italy and the Czech Republic. These super-comfortable vegan flats maneuvered uneven cobblestones perfectly! Plus, there were no blisters for this bashful adventurer. Also, the shoes can be tossed into the washing machine when they need a bit of sprucing up.

Most fun of all, the Portuguese shoe company makes them in rainbow’s array of colors. I chose a bright green pair (because why not?) with black soles, and now I want them in every color. If you get a pair for your mom, let me know which color you choose!

For Reading Moms

Books set in upcoming travel destinations or just travel books in general can be great gifts for parents who like to read. Personal favorites of mine are Alice Steinbach’s Without Reservations: The Travels of an Independent Woman (Random House, 2000), Rita Golden Gelman’s Tales of a Female Nomad, Deborah Copaken Kogan’s Shutterbabe, and Michael Crichton’s aptly named Travels. Each discusses, in the author’s unique way, having the nerve to travel and to see the world in a different way. For books set in particular locations, click here.

Whether you are gifting a mother (or motherly figure) or are a mother (or motherly figure), enjoy your Mother’s Day 2019!
