A DFW Stayover

A Layover at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Turns Out Well

A last-minute business trip taking me from New York to the Pacific Coast of Mexico means that I have an unwieldly layover at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, of the sort where my plane arrives at DFW late Wednesday night but my second flight does not depart until late the following morning. Lucky me, I get to either commit to some uncomfortable hours bonding with airport lounges or spend the night in an area hotel just to get some shut-eye in a secure environment. I choose the latter.

The Cost-Effectiveness of Best Western Irving

Using my HotelTonight app for the first time, I score a room for a very reasonable price at the Best Western Irving, which is so near the airport that Best Western runs a shuttle back and forth. Arriving in the evening after a long and harried day, I am too impatient to wait for the shuttle and hop into a cab instead. Twenty-six dollars (and about ten minutes), I am at my destination. Although I just minutes before, the hotel is aware of my reservation and checks me in swiftly. The room is clean and functional if a bit remote from any foodie opportunities. I make do at the 7/11 next door, a viable option for writers on deadline in need of sugar and caffeine.

The next morning, following breakfast in the lobby, I take the shuttle back to the airport with no problem. As it happens, my fellow passengers are also headed to my destination (Mazatlan, Mexico), so I pick up some pointers from them as we continue on our journey.

The Convenience of Grand Hyatt DFW

Four days later, I am back in DFW, this time stuck in a U.S. Customs line worthy of the Harry Potter ride at Universal Studios in Orlando (for my next journey, I will be sure to get Global Entry). What that means is I miss my connecting flight to New York and once again turn to HotelTonight. Cranky, harried, and on deadline, I opt for a more convenient and upscale option for my night: the Grand Hyatt Dallas Fort Worth, which I can access from the airport’s Terminal D.

The team at Grand Hyatt is also aware of my booking by the time I arrive, and checking in is quick and easy. My room offers a bit of welcome bliss following some less-than-friendly exchanges with airline personnel as I try to reschedule my connecting flight.

Room service offers vegetarian and vegan options, and the food is actually good. Late checkout the following morning is no problem, nor is scoring a toothbrush. Even as I write, I love daydreaming a bit as I appreciate my view of the expansive airport outside the hotel. I would opt for another layover at this hotel in a heartbeat.
